How does it work?

Alesse works by inhibiting ovulation of a female’s egg, as well as changing the cervical mucus to make it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. It also changes the endometrium which makes implantation of a fertilized egg more difficult.

Take Aviane exactly as prescribed by your provider. The intervals between doses of Aviane should not exceed 24 hours. Take each daily dose at the same time every day.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss 1 pink (active) pill of Alesse, take it as soon as you remember and take the next pill as normally scheduled. If needed, you may take two pills in one day. If you miss 2 pink (active) pills in a row in weeks 1 or 2 of your pack, take 2 pills on the day that you remember and 2 pills on the next day. Afterwards take 1 pill per day until you finish the pack. For more information on how to manage missed doses scenarios, contact your provider. Missed doses can lead to unplanned pregnancies.

Pharmacist Tips

  • This medication is used to prevent pregnancy but does not prevent you from contracting HIV or other sexuall transmitted diseases. Use other methods of protection such as a condom to prevent the transmission of these infections.
  • If you miss your dose, you may be at risk for pregnancy. The risk of pregnancy varies based on when you missed your dose in your cycle and how for many days doses were missed. Let your doctor or pharmacist know if you have missed any doses and are worried about being pregnant.
  • An uncommon side effect of this medication is the development of a blood clot. This risk may be increased if you are a current cigarette smoker. If you feel pain, numbness, or tingling in your lower limbs and the area is hot to the touch, you may have a blood clot. If that is the case, immediately seek medical attention.
