About Estring (Estradiol)

What is Estring ?

Estring is a prescription medication that is classified as an estrogen product.

What is it used for?

Estring is indicated for the treatment of urogenital symptoms due to postmenopausal atrophy of the vagina.

How does it work?

Through a negative feedback loop, Estring decreases the levels of luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone in postmenopausal women.

How do I use Estring?

Insert the ring into the vagina using a new applicator. This ring will stay in the vagina for 90 days. You should not feel the ring once it is in place and it should not interfere with sexual intercourse. If you are straining to defecate, the ring may move down to your lower vagina. If this occurs, you can push the ring up with your finger.

After 90 days, there will not be enough estradiol left in the ring to give its full effects.

To remove the ring:

  1. Wash your hands and dry thoroughly.
  2. Get into a comfortable position, standing with one leg up or lying down.
  3. Loop your finger through the ring, then gently pull it out.
  4. Throw away the used ring in the trash. Do not flush the ring.

What dosages are available?

Estring is available as a 2mg intravaginal ring.

What is the recommended dosage?

The recommended dose is 1 ring inserted into the vagina every 90 days but take as directed by your doctor.

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 1 ring every 90 days.

What if I miss a dose?

Insert the ring as soon as you remember. Never insert two rings together.
