Trulicity (Dulaglutide) is a prescription medication that is classified as a glucagon-like peptide agonist (GLP-1).

What is it used for? 

It is used as an adjunct treatment for type 2 diabetes to help improve glucose control. 

How does it work?

GLP-1 receptors are activated which results in insulin release in the presence of increased serum glucose. Glucagon secretion is also reduced and gastric emptying is delayed. 

How do I take Trulicity (Dulaglutide)?

Trulicity (Dulaglutide) is an injection medication that should be used as directed by your physician. This medication is given as a shot, remember to rotate injection sites and use a new needle each time. Possible injection sites include: stomach, thighs, or upper arms. 

What dosages are available?

What is the recommended dosage?

Generally,  it is initially dosed 0.75mg subcutaneously (under the skin) once weekly at the same time each week and can be adjusted to achieve better glycemic control based on patient-specific factors but take as directed by your doctor.

The maximum recommended dosage is 4.5mg once weekly.

What if I miss a dose? 

If you miss a dose of Trulicity (Dulaglutide) make sure and administer it within 3 days of the missed dose. 

What should you know before you take Trulicity (Dulaglutide)?

Boxed Warning: Dulaglutide was found to cause thyroid c- cell tumor in rats, it is unknown if this same reaction can occur in humans. As such this medication is contraindicated in patients with a family or a personal history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type-2 (MEN 2). 

Acute pancreatitis has been seen in clinical trials. If you experience persistent severe abdominal pain you should discontinue the use of Dulaglutide and be promptly evaluated by your physician. 

If you are also taking a sulfonylurea medication or insulin while on Trulicity (Dulaglutide) there is an increased chance of experiencing hypoglycemia. Make sure you are monitoring your glucose levels closely when starting, discontinuing, and making changes to Trulicity (Dulaglutide) or other diabetes medications. 

Hypersensitivity reactions can occur with Trulicity (Dulaglutide). If you experience any swelling of the face, tongue or throat while using Trulicity (Dulaglutide) seek immediate medical attention. 

Notify your doctor if you have a newly diagnosed severe gastrointestinal disease while taking Trulicity (Dulaglutide). 

If you have existing renal impairment make sure you have regular follow-up to evaluate your renal function while on Trulicity (Dulaglutide). If you have severe gastrointestinal reactions, contact your doctor.

• Pancreatitis can be caused by this medication. If you experience persistent severe abdominal pain, potentially that radiates to the back, and vomiting you should discontinue Trulicity (Dulaglutide) and contact your doctor immediately. Some or all of these symptoms may present. 
• Ensure you are monitoring blood sugars while starting, stopping, or modifying your Trulicity (Dulaglutide) dose or other medications for diabetes as this can put you at risk for hypoglycemia. 
• Truly has been shown to work as an adjunct therapy, along with diet and exercise, so it is important to maintain or start diet and exercise regimens in order to maximize its effectiveness.
