Armour Thyroid is a prescription medication that is classified as a thyroid product.

What is Armour Thyroid used for?

It is used to treat hypothyroidism, either replacing or supplementing the thyroid hormone. It is derived from porcine thyroid glands.

How does it work?

It exerts physiologic actions through control of DNA transcription and protein synthesis via Triiodothyronine (T3) and levothyroxine (T4).

How to take Armour Thyroid?

You will take the tablet by mouth on an empty stomach to increase absorption of the medication (e.g., 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast).

What dosages are available?

This medication comes as 15mg, 30mg, 60mg, 90mg, 120mg tablets, 180mg [scored], 240mg, and 300mg [scored] tablets. We may not have all dosages available to order.

What is the recommended dosage?

For the treatment of hypothyroidism, your doctor may initially start you at 30 to 32.5 mg/day and increase your dose by 15 to 16.25 mg increments every 2-3 weeks until adequate response to the medication has occurred. The recommended dose is patient-specific, refer to your doctor for accurate dosing recommendations.

What is the maximum dosage?

Max dosing of 130 mg/day.

What if I miss a dose?

Take the medication as soon as possible if you have missed a dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return back to your regular schedule. Never double the doses.

What should you know before you take this medication?

Caution in those with diabetes mellitus and insipidus, adrenal insufficiency, or myxedema, as symptoms can be aggravated/exaggerated.

Initial dosing should be lowered with a conservative dose titration in patients with cardiovascular disease.

Thyroid supplements are not approved or recommended for the treatment of infertility (female or male), unless associated with hypothyroidism.

Overtreatment can cause craniosynostosis in infants and premature closure of epiphyses in children. It can cause transient alopecia in children during the first few months of therapy. Cardiac overload, arrhythmias, and aspiration from suckling can occur during initiation of therapy (e.g., first 2 weeks) and should be monitored closely.

U.S. BOXED WARNING: Thyroid supplements are not approved for weight reduction. Thyroid supplements within the range of daily hormonal requirements, are ineffective for weight reduction in euthyroid patients. High-doses of thyroid supplementation may cause serious/life-threatening toxic side effects, especially when used with certain anorectic agents (e.g., sympathomimetic amines).

Thyroid products may decrease the therapeutic effect of sodium iodide, and use together should be avoided (Risk Category X).

Separate the dose of the calcium salt at least 4 hours from the Armour Thyroid dose as it can cause a decrease in effectiveness of the Armour Thyroid (Risk Category D).
