Azilect is a prescription medication that is classified as an MAO type B (MAO-B) inhibitor and an anti-Parkinson agent.

How does it work?

What if I miss a dose?
Take your dose of Azilect as soon as possible, but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule. Never double doses.
What should you know before you take Azilect?
Caution in patients with mild hepatic impairment; a dose reduction is recommended. Avoid use of Azilect in patients with moderate to severe hepatic impairment.
Dyskinesia, exacerbation of any preexisting dyskinesia, or increased dopaminergic side effects can occur when taking Azilect as an adjunct to levodopa.
Monitor for any new or worsening mental status/behavioral changes when on Azilect. Symptoms can be severe, including delirium, agitation, aggressive behavior, paranoid ideation, delusions, hallucinations, disorientation, psychotic-like behavior, or confusion. If any of these symptoms develop, consider a dose reduction or stopping the medication.
Azilect and any other dopaminergic agents used for the treatment of Parkinson disease have been associated with compulsive behaviors and/or loss of impulse control.
Azilect can cause an exacerbation of hypertension. Blood pressure should be monitored for new onset hypertension or hypertension that is not adequately controlled after starting Azilect.
Risk of melanoma may be increased with Azilect, although an increased risk has been associated with Parkinson disease itself. Patients should have regular/frequent skin checks.
Avoid use (recommended) in patients with major psychotic disorders due to risk of exacerbating psychosis.
Serotonin syndrome (SS) has been reported with concomitant use of antidepressants (e.g., SNRI, SSRI, tetracyclic, TCA, and triazolopyridine antidepressants), MAO inhibitors, meperidine, methadone, tramadol, and propoxyphene.
