What is Benicar? 

Benicar is prescription medication that is classified as an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB).

What is Benicar used for? 

It is used for the treatment of hypertension for those 6 years of age and up.

How does it work?

Olmesartan works by blocking the vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II. It does so by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor located inside vascular smooth muscle.

How to take Benicar?

Take Benicar by mouth at the indicated dose your doctor prescribed with or without food.

What dosages are available?

It comes as both brand and generic 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg tablets.

What is the recommended dosage?

For adults/pediatric patients ≥35kg with hypertension the recommended starting dose is 20 mg once daily, for pediatric 20 to <35kg the recommended starting dose is 10mg once daily.

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum daily dosage is 40mg.

What if I miss a dose?

Administer your dose as soon as possible, but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule. Never double doses.

What should you know before you take Benicar?

Angioedema risk is less than that of an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, but can still occur. Do not readminister an ARB to a patient that has developed angioedema from this medication.

Symptoms of sprue-like enteropathy (e.g., chronic, severe diarrhea with significant weight loss) have been reported with use. If this develops, stop treatment and consider an alternative antihypertensive.

Hyperkalemia may occur, with a higher risk of occurrence in those with diabetes mellitus, renal dysfunction, concomitant use of potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplement and/or potassium containing salts. Use with caution in these patient populations.

Symptomatic hypotension can occur in patients who are volume- or salt- depleted. A dose reduction or correction of volume depletion before administration can be done with help. This is not a contraindication to the use of this medicine.

Renal dysfunction may be associated with Benicar. Renal deterioration and/or an increase in serum creatinine may occur. There is a higher risk of this in patients with low renal blood flow whose GFR is dependent on efferent arteriolar vasoconstriction by angiotensin II.

Use caution in patients with significant mitral/aortic stenosis, unstented unilateral/bilateral renal artery, or preexisting renal dysfunction.

Avoid use if possible in patients with ascites due to refractory ascites or cirrhosis.

U.S. Boxed Warning: Pregnancy; when pregnancy is detected, stop Benicar immediately/as soon as possible as this medication can cause injury or death to the fetus.
