What is Elmiron?
Elmiron is a prescription medication that is classified as a urinary analgesic or genitourinary agent.
What is Elmiron used for?
It is used for symptom relief due to interstitial cystitis.
How does it work?
It attaches to the membrane of the bladder wall and acts as a buffer to control cell permeability, preventing irritating solutes in urine from reaching the cells.
How to take Elmiron?
Take your Elmiron capsule whole as directed by your doctor with water 1 hour prior or 2 hours after your meal (taken as 100 mg capsule three times daily).
You should be assessed by your doctor after 3 months of Elmiron therapy. If improvement has not occured with no limiting adverse effects, therapy can be continued for another 3 months.
What dosages are available?
Elmiron is only available as a brand in the U.S. as 100 mg capsules.
What is the recommended dosage?
It is typically dosed 100 mg three times daily but take as directed by your doctor.
What is the maximum dosage?
300mg daily is the maximum recommended dosage.
What if you miss a dose?
Take the medication as soon as possible if you have missed a dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return back to your regular schedule. Never double the doses.
What should you know before you take Elmiron?
There are bleeding risks as Elmiron is a low-molecular weight heparin-like compound with fibrinolytic and anticoagulant effects. Patients who plan on undergoing invasive procedures or have signs/symptoms of other increased risk of bleeding or underlying coagulopathies should be evaluated prior to starting Elmiron.
Ocular effects, such as pigmentary changes in the retina have been reported with use of 3 years or longer, but can also occur with shorter duration of therapy. Cumulative dose of Elmiron may be a risk factor. It is important to obtain a detailed ophthalmologic history before starting Elmiron. Retinal exams are important and recommended for all patients during the first 6 months of starting therapy. Genetic testing should be considered in patients with a family history of hereditary pattern dystrophy. Weigh the risks and benefits of starting therapy. Follow-up retinal examinations should be continued even after discontinuation of Elmiron.
Efficacy and safety have not been established in those less than 16 years of age.
Careful evaluation of patients with aneurysm should be done prior to starting therapy.
Careful evaluation of patients with thrombocytopenia and/or hemophilia should be done prior to therapy.
Careful evaluation of patients with gastrointestinal polyps, ulcerations, and/or diverticula should be done prior to therapy.
Caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction.
Caution in patients with a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.
Caution and only use if clearly needed in pregnant women. Caution in women who are breastfeeding. There is limited data if Elmiron is excreted into the breastmilk.
