What is Glumetza (Metformin) used for?

It is used to achieve glycemic control in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus in combination with diet and exercise.

How does it work? 

It increases glucose uptake and utilization but does not affect insulin secretion. It achieves glycemic control by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity.

Black Box Warning: Lactic Acidosis resulting in death, hypothermia, hypotension, and resistant bradyarrhythmias have been reported. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include: malaise, myalgias, respiratory distress, somnolence, and abdominal pain. If you experience any of these symptoms, immediately discontinue and seek medical attention.

Chronic metformin use may lead to Vitamin-B12 deficiencies and supplementation may be required.

Hematological parameters and Vitamin-B12 levels may need to be monitored periodically

Interactions

Does this medication interact with other drugs, foods, or alcohol?

When used concomitantly with carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, the risk for lactic acidosis is increased and more frequent monitoring is recommended.

Ranolazine, vandetanib, dolutegravir, cimetidine, and other medications that can reduce metformin clearance can cause metformin accumulation in the body. Concomitant use should be used with caution and avoided if possible.

Excessive alcohol intake should be avoided as it causes increased lactate metabolism via metformin.

Keep Glumetza (Metformin) in the original container and store it in a dry place at room temperature 15-30°C (59-86°F).

  • Hypoglycemia is an uncommon side effect when taking metformin monotherapy but when combined with other diabetes medications such as insulin, the risk is increased. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include: nausea, dizziness, confusion, alterations in mental status.
  • You are at an increased risk of lactic acidosis if you are dehydrated, have excessive alcohol intake, have renal impairment, and are of older age (older than 65 years of age).
