Retin-A is a prescription topical medication that is classified as a retinoid.

What is it used for? 

Retin-A is used as a topical formulation used to treat acne vulgaris and other skin conditions.

How does it work?

It decreases the cohesiveness of follicular epithelial cells and stimulates mitotic activity which increases cell turnover of follicular epithelial cells.

How do I take Retin-A Gel?

Use Retin-A Gel as directed by your doctor. Wash your hands before and after using this medication. Use this medication on dry skin and refrain from washing face or applying makeup for at least 1 hour. Using extra of this medication will not make it work faster, the application on the face should be invisible; if it dries and appears flakey it means you are applying too much of this medication.

Retin-A Gel is available as a brand 0.025% formulation and as a generic in 0.01%, 0.025%, 0.05%, and 0.1%.

What is the recommended dosage?

Can you mix Retin-A gel with a moisturizer?

In general, you should not mix a moisturizer with Retin-A gel unless otherwise directed by your physician. The recommendations currently are to apply the gel at night and in the morning when you wash your face again then applying a moisturizer product may be beneficial to help prevent irritation.

Do you wash off Tretinoin Gel?

This medication should not be washed off until at least an hour after applying it in order to provide adequate time for the medication to absorb. Washing your face is advised in the package insert but not until the following morning after application.

Should I use Retin-A every night?

The usual dosage for this medication is 1 application every night at bedtime, but in some cases for patients with highly sensitive skin, a regimen of every other night is recommended to avoid pronounced adverse effects with the medication.

Why does my skin look worse with Retin-A?

Initially when starting Retin-A it is not uncommon to have skin flaking and generalized irritation. This stems from how the medication works, it increases cell turnover of the epithelial cells allowing for removal of the comedones responsible for the acne formation.

How long does Retin-A take to work?

Many patients have noticed significant reductions in their acne within 2-3 weeks but often it can take more than six weeks of therapy to observe beneficial effects.
