Singulair (Montelukast) is a prescription medication that is classified as a leukotriene receptor antagonist.
What is it used for?
It is used as a prophylactic and chronic therapy for asthma, prevention of exercise-induced asthma, as well as allergic rhinitis.
How does it work?
It binds to the cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLT) receptors found in smooth muscle cells and macrophages. This prevents airway edema, smooth muscle contraction and other respiratory inflammation.
How do I take Singulair (Montelukast)?
Take Singulair (Montelukast) as directed by your doctor. If taking it for exercise-induced asthma, take at least 2 hours prior to exercise. Do not take more than the recommended dose.

If you are switching to montelukast from an inhaled steroid inhaler, do not abruptly discontinue your inhaler unless otherwise indicated by your doctor.
A wide variety of neuropsychiatric events have been reported in patients taking montelukast. Given the inconsistent presentation of these events it is difficult to determine the exact rate of occurrence in patients. They have been reported in all age groups and in patients who are on therapy and in those who have discontinued therapy. If you have concerns about this you should have a conversation with your doctor about the risks vs benefits of being on montelukast.

When Singulair (Montelukast) was studied in patients with asthma there was no evaluation of the efficacy of morning administration. The trials did show that there was a benefit to taking Singulair (Montelukast) in the evening with or without food.
Patients will usually notice the effect of Singulair (Montelukast) after the first dose and continue to notice an effect after the whole duration of treatment. Patients also should not have a rebound of worsening asthma after discontinuation.
Patients on Singulair (Montelukast) do report >5% of the time that Singulair (Montelukast) will make you have a runny nose.
Although Singulair (Montelukast) has not been shown to cause withdrawal effects, you should consult your doctor prior to discontinuing Singulair (Montelukast) as it may be essential to your asthma related therapy.
