What should you know before you take Voltaren (Diclofenac Sodium) Gel?

Black box warning: NSAID therapies have been linked to cardiovascular thrombotic events (heart attacks). Based on this, the lowest effective doses for the least amount of time should be used in order to reduce your risk. 

If you have had a history of ulcers or other gastrointestinal (GI) inflammation, you should use this mediation with caution since it can exacerbate/ cause these conditions. 

This medication can alter your liver function tests, if it produces significant persistent abnormalities you should discontinue Voltaren (Diclofenac Sodium) Gel. 

Patients with existing renal dysfunction should use caution with this medication since it can cause renal injury. 

Patients with existing hypertension should use this medication cautiously given that it can cause hypertension. 

If you have a history of heart failure or fluid retention this medication can exacerbate fluid accumulation. 

Hypersensitivity reactions have occurred with Voltaren (Diclofenac Sodium) Gel. If you experience any swelling of the face, tongue, or throat while on Voltaren (Diclofenac Sodium) Gel discontinue it immediately and seek appropriate medical attention. 

NSAIDS can cause Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) which are both serious adverse skin reactions that can be fatal. If you develop a rash while using this medication, discontinue and be evaluated by your physician.
