What is it used for?

How Long Does Xarelto Stay in Your System After You Stop Taking It?
Xarelto rapidly clears from the body, typically within about 24-30 hours in most adults with normal renal function. Its blood-thinning effect will start to wear off within a day or so after the last dose, but it may take a bit longer in older adults or those with reduced kidney function.
Because of this, never stop Xarelto suddenly unless your doctor advises you to do so, since your risk of clots can go up right away once the drug is out of your system.
Can I Take Xarelto With Other Blood Thinners or Aspirin?
Combining Xarelto with other anticoagulants, such as warfarin, heparin, or Eliquis, or antiplatelet agents such as aspirin, clopidogrel, or Plavix, significantly increases the risk of bleeding. Sometimes, your physician might put you on low-dose aspirin together with Xarelto for a heart condition, but this is only done when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.
Always let every provider know that you’re on Xarelto before starting any new medication, including over-the-counter pain relievers or supplements.
What Should I Do if I Have to Undergo Surgery or a Dental Procedure?
If you are scheduled for surgery, a procedure, or even a dental extraction, your doctor will provide specific instructions on when to stop Xarelto in advance. For minor procedures, this might be skipping one or two doses. For major surgery, you may have to stop it several days in advance.
Never discontinue or adjust your dose without consulting your healthcare provider. Your care team will determine the safest timing for stopping it based on the procedure you are having and your overall risk of clots versus bleeding.
Does Xarelto Require Regular Blood Tests?
Unlike warfarin, Xarelto does not require routine blood tests to monitor your INR (international normalized ratio) or “blood thinness” level. That’s one reason many patients prefer it. It’s easier to manage day-to-day. However, your doctor may still order occasional blood tests to check kidney function, liver enzymes, or a complete blood count, especially if you’re on long-term therapy or have other health conditions.
Can I Drink Alcohol While Taking Xarelto?
Moderate use of alcohol with Xarelto is generally safe, but heavy drinking, including binge drinking, significantly raises one’s risk for serious bleeding, particularly in the stomach and brain. If you have liver disease or a history of stomach ulcers, be sure to ask your doctor if any amount of alcohol is safe for you.
What Should I Do if I Forget to Take Xarelto?
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember that day, but do not take two doses at once unless your doctor has instructed you to take the missed dose according to your dosing schedule (for example, 15 mg twice daily). For once-daily doses (10 mg, 15 mg, or 20 mg), take only that one dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule the next day.
