Zovirax (Acyclovir) Cream is a prescription medication that is classified as a herpes simplex virus (HSV) nucleoside analogue DNA polymerase inhibitor.

What is Zovirax used for?

It is used to treat recurrent infections of herpes labialis (cold sores) in patients that are aged 12 and up who are not immunocompromised.

How does it work?

It inhibits replication of viral DNA by incorporating into the growing viral DNA chain and terminating it, inactivation of the DNA polymerase, and by competitive inhibition of the DNA polymerase.
