What is Avodart used for? 

Avodart is a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor used for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is used as monotherapy or in combination with Flomax to help improve the symptoms of BPH, decrease the risk of acute urinary retention, and decrease the risk of any BPH-surgery.

How does it work?

It inhibits the conversion of testosterone to 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT); DHT is responsible for the initial development and enlargement of the prostate gland.

How to take Avodart?

Take your Avodart by mouth with or without meals. Be sure to swallow the capsule whole. Do not break open or chew the medication.

What if I miss a dose?

Use with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction.

Carefully monitor therapy in patients with a large residual urinary volume or severely decreased urinary flow for obstructive uropathy. These patients may not be candidates for Avodart. Weigh risk vs. benefits.

Avoid donating blood during or for the first 6 months following discontinuation of therapy due to risk of administration to the transfusion recipient who is pregnant.

The most common side effects include:

• Decreased libido, gynecomastia, increased luteinizing hormone, increased testosterone level, increased thyroid stimulating hormone level
