Drug Information

About Jalyn (Dutasteride/Tamsulosin)

What is Jalyn?

Jalyn is a prescription medication that is classified as a combination product containing a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (dutasteride) and an alpha-adrenergic antagonist (tamsulosin).

What is Jalyn used for?

It is used for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in males with enlarged prostates

How does it work?

The dutasteride component inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is the androgen responsible for causing the enlargement of the prostate gland. The tamsulosin component antagonizes the alpha-1 adrenoreceptor which results in the relaxation of the smooth muscle located in the bladder neck and prostate, improving BPH symptoms.

How do I take Jalyn?

This medication should be taken as directed by your physician, 30 minutes after the same meal every day. Do not take more than prescribed. This medication should not be crushed, chewed, or opened prior to use. While taking this medication, your doctor may also order prostate-specific antigen tests (PSA) before starting treatment and during treatment to monitor for prostate cancer.

What dosages are available?

Jalyn is available as brand and generic as 0.5 mg/0.4 mg capsules.

What is the recommended dosage?

Jalyn is typically dosed 1 capsule daily but should be taken as directed by your doctor.

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 1 dose per day or the dose your doctor recommends, if instructed differently.

What if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is close to the time you are due for your next dose. If that is the case, just wait until it is time for your next dose. Do not double your dose to compensate for your missed dose. If you have missed a dose for several consecutive days, let your doctor know.

Jalyn FAQ

Is Jalyn safe?

It is safe if used appropriately in the male population. Pregnant women or women of childbearing potential should not handle these capsules as it may result in harm to the unborn fetus.

What happens when you stop taking dutasteride?

Discontinuation can cause increases in your PSA level and increased prostate volume. Never discontinue Jalyn without approval from your doctor.

Why is tamsulosin taken at night?

This medication has a risk for dizziness and fainting. Some patients decide to take their dose at night to avoid these effects during the day when they may be driving.

Can Tamsulosin cause frequent urination?

It relaxes the smooth muscle of the bladder neck and prostate which makes it easier to urinate. Patients with BPH have difficulty urinating as one of their symptoms; this medication will make it easier to urinate but should not affect the frequency of urination.

How quickly does dutasteride work?

Some patients have reported improvement in their BPH symptoms after 3 months of use but it may take up to 6 months to see benefit.
