What is Edarbyclor? 

Edarbyclor is prescription medication that is classified as an angiotensin II receptor blocker (azilsartan) and thiazide-related diuretic (chlorthalidone).

Uses

What is Edarbyclor used for? 

It is used for the treatment of hypertension when monotherapy is inadequate.

How does it work?

The azilsartan component blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptors, which then blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II causing vasodilation and decreased aldosterone effects. Chlorthalidone is a diuretic that increases excretion of chloride and sodium.

How to take Edarbyclor?

Take your Edarbyclor tablet whole, by mouth, with or without food at the same day every day as prescribed by your doctor.

What dosages are available?

Edarbyclor is available only as brand and come in doses of:

  • 40 mg/25 mg: Azilsartan medoxomil 40 mg and chlorthalidone 25 mg tablets.
  • 40 mg/12.5 mg: Azilsartan medoxomil 40 mg and chlorthalidone 12.5 mg tablets.

What is the recommended dosage?

The recommended starting dose is 40/12.5mg once daily.

What if I miss a dose?

Take the medication as soon as possible if you have missed a dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return back to your regular schedule. Never double the doses.

Warnings & Precautions

What should you know before you take Edarbyclor?

Angioedema is rarely reported with angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) but may occur at any time during therapy (especially with the first dose). Discontinue therapy immediately if angioedema occurs.

Hyperkalemia can occur with therapy. Risk factors that increase this risk include renal dysfunction, diabetes mellitus, concomitant use of potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, and/or potassium-containing salts.

Hypokalemia can occur due to the thiazide diuretic. Correct before initiating Edarbyclor.

Use with caution in renal and hepatic dysfunction. There are no dose adjustments.

Use with caution in patients with significant mitral/aortic stenosis.

Use caution in patients with chronic renal failure, a history of gout, or a familial predisposition to gout as chlorthalidone can precipitate gout.

Consider avoiding use in patients with hypercalcemia as thiazide diuretics can decrease renal calcium excretion.

Photosensitivity may occur with chlorthalidone.

Use caution in patients with pre-diabetes or diabetes as chlorthalidone can cause a change in glucose control.

Caution in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) as chlorthalidone can activate or exacerbate it.

Caution in patients with moderate to high cholesterol levels (chlorthalidone).
