What is Enablex?

Enablex is a prescription medication that is classified as an anticholinergic and antimuscarinic.

Uses

What is Enablex used for? 

It is used for the treatment of overactive bladder and its symptoms of urinary frequency, urgency, or urge incontinence.

How does it work?

It binds to the M(3) receptor and causes  contraction of human bladder and gastrointestinal smooth muscle, salivation, and iris sphincter function.

Directions

How to take Enablex?

Take your Enablex tablet whole, by mouth, once daily with water as prescribed by your doctor. Enablex can be taken with or without food.

Do not crush or chew your Enablex tablet. It is an extended-release tablet, and crushing or chewing it will cause a huge release of the medication all at once.

Enablex is initially dosed at 7.5 mg once daily, and if response is inadequate, can be increased to 15 mg daily after a minimum of 2 weeks.

What dosages are available?

Enablex is available as a 24-hr extended release tablet as brand and generic (7.5 mg, 15 mg).

What is the recommended dosage?

It is typically dosed 7.5 mg once daily but take as directed by your doctor.

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 15 mg/day.

What if you miss a dose?

Take the medication as soon as possible if you have missed a dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return back to your regular schedule. Never double the doses.

Warnings & Precautions

What should you know before you take Enablex?

Angioedema of the face, tongue, lips, and/or larynx have been reported with Enablex use. Some cases of angioedema have occurred with just the first dose. This can be life-threatening and requires immediate discontinuation of the mediation and immediate supportive care if the larynx, hypopharynx, or tongue is involved. Get medical help immediately.

CNS effects have been reported with Enablex use, such as confusion, headache, somnolence, and hallucinations, particularly with the first dose of medication or a dose increase. Reduce the dose or stop the medication if needed.

Heat prostration can occur in the presence of increased environment temperature. Caution with exercise and/or hot weather.

Caution with patients with bladder flow obstruction as Enablex can increase the risk of urinary retention.

Caution in patients with decreased gastrointestinal (GI) motility, such as severe constipation or ulcerative colitis, or GI obstruction as Enablex can increase the risk of gastric retention.

Caution in patients with controlled (receiving treatment) narrow-angle glaucoma.

Caution in hepatic dysfunction. Dose adjustment is required with moderate hepatic dysfunction (Child-Pugh class B. Enablex is not recommended in severe hepatic dysfunction (Child-Pugh class C).

Caution in patients with myasthenia gravis.

Pregnancy Category C.

It is unknown whether Enablex is excreted into the breast milk.

Does this medication interact with other drugs, foods, or alcohol?

Avoid use with other anticholinergic agents, abametapir, aclidinium, doxorubicin, fusidic acid, glycopyrronium, mequitazine, oxatomide, potassium chloride, potassium citrate, thioridazine, and umeclidinium (Risk Category X).

How should this medication be stored?

Store your Enablex tablets at room temperature between 15°C – 30°C (59°F – 86°F). Keep Enablex out of direct light.
