Levitra (vardenafil) is a prescription medication that is classified as a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor.

It is used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).

How does it work?

By inhibiting PDE5, the amount of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) increases which relaxes the smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum. This results in an increase in blood flow to the penis which promotes an erection.

How do I take Levitra?

Take Levitra by mouth with or without food 60 minutes before sexual activity. Do not split the tablets. If used once daily, it should be taken at the same time each day without regard to sexual activity.

What if I miss a dose?

Priapism, or a painful erection, lasting > 6 hours has been reported (rarely). Call your provider if this occurs. 

Vision loss may occur (rarely) and can be a sign of NAION. Use is not recommended in patients with known degenerative retinal disorders. 

Caution in elderly patients. A dose reduction may be needed. 

Renal dysfunction: Safety and efficacy has not been studied in this patient population (including ESRD and dialysis). Use is not recommended. 

Caution in active peptic ulcer disease as safety and efficacy has not been studied. 

Caution in patients with anatomical deformation of the penis. 

Caution in patients with bleeding disorders. 

Use is not recommended in patients with a blood pressure of < 90/50 mm Hg or > 170/100 mm Hg, unstable angina or angina during intercourse, stroke, life-threatening arrhythmias, or an MI within the last 6 months, cardiac failure or coronary artery disease causing unstable angina. Caution in patients with left ventricular outflow obstruction. 

Not recommended for those with congenital QT prolongation.
