Use caution in patients with renal dysfunction, a history of renal disease, or those on other nephrotoxic medications.
Use caution in patients that are predisposed to any of these conditions as they have been reported: pericarditis and myocarditis (mesalamine-induced cardiac hypersensitivity reactions).
Use with caution in the elderly (> 65 years of age) as postmarketing reports and uncontrolled studies suggest an increased incidence of blood dyscrasias in those > 65 years of age.
Use with caution in patients with pre-existing skin conditions as severe photosensitivity reactions have been reported.
Evaluate the risk vs benefits of therapy in those with hepatic dysfunction as hepatic failure has been reported with Asacol use.
An intolerance syndrome can develop, with symptoms from cramping, bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, which can be difficult to differentiate from an exacerbation. Monitor for any worsening of symptoms and stop the medication immediately if this syndrome occurs or is suspected.
