What is Latuda (Lurasidone)?

Latuda (Lurasidone) is a prescription medication that is classified as a second generation, atypical antipsychotic. 

Uses

What is Latuda used for? 

It is used for the treatment of bipolar major depression (ages 10 years of age and up) and schizophrenia (adults and adolescents).

How does it work?

It exerts its antidepressant effects by acting as an antagonist at the dopamine receptor and partial agonist at the serotonin receptor.

How do I take Latuda? 

Take your Latuda (Lurasidone) by mouth with at least 350 calories for adequate absorption. 

What dosages are available?

Latuda (Lurasidone) is available only as a brand as a tablet (20mg, 40mg, 60mg, 80mg, 120mg). 

What is the recommended dosage?

The recommended dose varies based on patient-specific factors, refer to your doctor for dosing recommendations.

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 160mg/day.

What if I miss a dose?

Take the medication as soon as possible if you have missed a dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return back to your regular schedule. Never double the dose.

Warnings & Precautions

What should you know before you take Latuda (Lurasidone)?

Monitor for any clinical worsening and emergence of suicidal behaviors and thoughts.

Antipsychotics may affect cardiac conduction.

May cause CNS depression. 

Blood dyscrasias have been reported in clinical trials and post-marketing reports (leukopenia, neutropenia, and agranulocytosis).

Increases in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels have been seen with atypical antipsychotic use. 

Extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) can occur.

Esophageal antimotility has been observed with antipsychotic use.

Use may increase the risk of falls due to orthostatic hypotension, somnolence, and sensory or motor instability.

Use of atypical antipsychotics have been associated with hyperglycemia.

Use may be associated with neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). If NMS is suspected, stop Latuda (Lurasidone)immediately.

Significant weight gain has been observed with antipsychotic use. The risk of weight gain is lower with Latuda (Lurasidone)when compared to other antipsychotics.

Use caution in patients with hemodynamic instability, severe cardiac disease, ischemic heart disease, or prior myocardial infarction.

Caution in those at risk of seizures, history of seizures, or conditions that lower the seizure threshold. 

A gradual taper should be done when discontinuing Latuda (Lurasidone)to prevent physical withdrawal symptoms and rebound symptoms from occurring.

Renal dysfunction may require a dose adjustment:

  • CrCl 50 mL/minute or greater: No dose adjustment needed.
  • CrCl < 50 mL/min: 
    • Initial dose: 20 mg daily
    • Maximum dose: 80 mg/day

Hepatic dysfunction may require a dose adjustment:

  • Mild dysfunction (Child-Pugh class A): No dose adjustment needed. 
  • Moderate dysfunction (Child-Pugh class B):
    • Initial dose: 20 mg daily
    • Maximum dose: 80 mg/day
  • Severe dysfunction (Child-Pugh class C):
    • Initial dose: 20 mg daily
    • Maximum dose: 40 mg/day

U.S. Boxed Warning

  • Increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-like psychosis.
  • Antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thoughts in young adults and pediatric patients in short-term studies.

 

Side Effects

What are the side effects of Latuda (Lurasidone)?

Some common side effects include:

  • Akathisia, difficulty moving, slow movements, tremor, or muscle stiffness
  • Sleepiness
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Anxiety

Interactions

Does this medication interact with other drugs, foods, or alcohol?

Avoid use with abametapir, amisulpride, azelastine (nasal), bromopride, bromperidol, cabergoline, strong CYP3A4 inducers or inhibitors, dopamine, epinephrine, fusidic acid, grapefruit juice, metoclopramide, orphenadrine, oxomemazine, paraldehyde, pimozide, piribedil, St. John’s wort, sulpiride, and thalidomide (Risk Category X).

Storage

How should this medication be stored?

Latuda (Lurasidone) should be stored between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F). Keep out of reach of children.

  • Latuda (Lurasidone) can cause your blood sugar levels to increase. If you experience any of these symptoms while taking Latuda, call your doctor:
    • Increased thirst, increased urination (more than usual), extreme hunger, feeling weak/tired, feeling sick to your stomach, feeling confused, or fruity breath.
  • Latuda (Lurasidone) can cause your blood pressure to decrease. Lightheadedness and fainting can occur if you stand up from a sitting position too quickly.
  • Latuda (Lurasidone) can cause weight gain.
