It is used for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Panic disorder (PD), Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Social anxiety disorder (SAD), and Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Zoloft inhibits the neuronal reuptake of serotonin which enhances serotonergic activity in the central nervous system.

What should you know before you take Zoloft (Sertraline)?

Possible risk of serotonin syndrome when taking Zoloft as monotherapy and increased risk if taking concomitantly with other serotonergic agents. If you notice signs of serotonin syndrome, discontinue the medication and let your doctor know.

Increased risk of bleeding if taken concomitantly with: aspirin, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antiplatelet drugs, warfarin, and other anticoagulants.

Patients need to be screened for bipolar disorder prior to initiation because this medication can cause activation of mania/hypomania

Use in caution with patients who have seizure disorders

Avoid use in patients with untreated narrow angle glaucoma
